Sunday 13th
April 2008 Short League Match against Fylde
At 9.30, during
a bit of a panic setting up two new short lawns, which would minimise
the wear on two full lawns which are still recovering from last
season, the Flyde team arrived- Lee Hartley(0), Betty Bates(9),
Geoffrey Lipshaw(10) and Ian Theakestone(10). Although we were
not quite ready the kettle was on and the Southport teams names
were added to the score sheet - Brian Lewis(3), Simon Wolf(3),
Eillen Gallagher(8) and David Key(10). Thanks to Brian, who would
be playing his first ever short match, for standing in at the
last minute for Anne Belcher who was unwell.
Round one had
to be thought of as a warm up for Southport, we lost all but one
game and Simon only beat Ian after time during his last turn and
by 1 point.
Round 2 proved positve for all but one Southport palyer. David,
who was also playing his first league match, lost to Lee with
the same margin, 7 points as his first game. The rest of us just
about scraped through. Not to worry we were drawing 4-4 at lunch
and the sun had
begun to shine.
After a warm lunch, thanks to all who contributed, round 3 saw
four wins for Southport, David had a slow game agianst Goeffery
but kept at it and was +7 at the end. The pressure was now off
and we only needed one more win in round 4 to be victorious.
Round 4 had Brian on the edge of his seat as Lee was just about
to catch up and peg out one of Brians balls, but Lee had positioned
Brains` backward ball by mistake. This allowed Brian to get back
in and peg both his balls out. To keep a clean sweeper in round
4 Simon
needed, with three balls left in play, to run three hoops, peel
and run another, peg both balls out in his last turn after time,
and then for Betty to miss the peg with her last shot. Guess what?
It was a good day, Southport won 11-5, the sun eventually shone,
our two newbies had wins, Eilleen was only beaten by Lee and we
have
confidence that a Southport team can do it again next time.
