Midweek Handicap Croquet League Southport v Bowdon

Southport 6 Bowdon Griffins 1
It was wet, squelchy and soggy, but the Southport Midweek team coped with the conditions far better than a very experienced Bowdon Griffins team. The investment the club has made in lawn maintenance in the last year has now created a flat fast surface which can endure inclement weather. Captain Alan Farrell motivated his team of  Tony Thomas, Ray Lowe and Margaret Dalley to produce some stoic croquet in the continuous rain. Tony Thomas got the team off to a good start with a battling victory, coming from behind, against the Bowdon number two.  The doubles pairing of Ray Lowe and Alan Farrell then pulled of an excellent doubles victory quickly followed by a Margaret Dalley victory, to send the Southport team into lunch with a 3-0 lead. In worsening conditions after lunch, the rain soaked Southport players took to their task in determined fashion. Tony Thomas quickly disposed of his opponent to put the match beyond Bowdon.  Ray Lowe then just lost out to the Bowdon number one – one of the best players in the North West, but Margaret Dalley and Alan Farrell kept their form to secure two more victories and give the midweek team a fine confidence building victory.
