Congratualtion to Mary Warren
Who with her
partner, came first in the consolation doubles event in 3rd Golf
Croquet Handicap Tournament held at Pendle last weekend (19/20th
April).
Ros Pimlott
won the main 2008 Golf Croquet Handicap Tournament event.
The East wind
gave Pendle a distinctly wintry and cold feel this weekend. The
players came attired in multi-layers of clothes to keep the chill
out. They looked more like spacemen than croquet players in their
bulging wind proofs. The conditions didn?t deter them from finishing
a heavy schedule. They all deserved a medal for braving the elements.
Ros Pimlott
from Bowdon won the main event. She beat Pendle?s flu ridden Barbara
Dutton in the final. David Harkness (Ilkley/Pendle) and Mary Warren
(Southport) walked away with the consolation doubles event.

Bob Burnett wins the
Easter Sunday Charity One Ball
It will
come as no surprise to anyone that Bob Burnett won Easter Sunday's
one ball competition (should his one ball handicap be looked at?
- a question for the handicap committee!!). The competition was
followed by a Jacob's Join
and a good day was had by all.
The Club Needs You
The committee have been asked to organise a volunteer
presence during weekdays at the clubhouse. The times and days can
be flexible to suit availability. Our volunteers have two important
roles - one to give a sense of security to any member who may turn
up alone and secondly to ensure every one present gets a game or
activity of some description. If you are interested in volunteering
some time as a 'Club Host' then please contact John Taylor (07866
597 030) or Tony Thomas (07841 538 676). Alternatively, simply add
your name to the notice in the clubhouse.
Last chance to get details
right in the Handbook!
Please check that the membership information in last year's Handbook
was correct and complete - particularly titles (ladies) and postcodes.

If you have changed your address, your mobile number or have a new
e-mail address DO tell the Secretary.

April/May League Fixtures
The early season fixtures are:
The Sandgrounders Advanced team is home to Bowdon Saints on 27th
April and away to Fylde on 10th May, the same day that 'The Dukes
Folly' team is away at Pendle & Craven.
Although the fixture book will show that the Follys have games against
Sandgrounders and Crake Valley in April these matches are unlikely
to be played until later in the season following agreement between
the captains.
Handicap team is away at Bury on 12th April, home to Crake Valley
on 11th May and away to Bowdon Firs on 18th May
Short team:
home to Fylde 13th April
away to Bowdon 18th May
The Golf team is at home to Llanfairfechan on 12th April and plays
away to Pendle on 26th. The golfers are also at home to Fylde on
17th May.
If you are hoping to play for the Midweek team then you need to
know that your first match is not until June.
We are hosting our CA Open Event over the weekend of 19th &
20th April so please use the North Lawns for your games on Friday
18th and over the weekend.
Charity One Ball -
Easter Sunday 23rd March 2008, starts 12pm
The winner of
this handicap competition will receive a place in the Championship
Finals at Winchester on 19th April.
This national competition is a fundraising event in support of
Cancer Research UK. A £3 donation is requested on entry.
Jacob's Join at 4.00 pm.
As is usual
at the start of the season, we shall be taking our annual photograph
of members. If you wish to appear in this group photo call (and
we really want every member in the picture) please would you attend
dressed in whites. The picture will be available to members and
probably used in club publicity.
Winter Dinner
The Annual Winter
Dinner was, by general agreement, a big success.
We had an excellent turnout of 64 members who agreed that the
venue was excellent, the food plentiful and tasty, the wine (and
port) good value and the event organisation was pretty good too.
You will be pleased to know that we have already approached the
Old Links with a view to hiring the club's main lounge for next
year.
Bob's spot the ball confounded most of the competitors but, together
with a generously supported raffle, helped to raise around £300
for funds.
